According to legendary history, Ruhunu Ktaragama Maha Devalaya was built by King Dutugemunu around 160 years B.C. This is a Hindu and Buddhist temple complex shrine dedicated to Lord Katirkaman also known as God Kataragama. It is one of the few religious sites in Sri Lanka that is venerated by Sinhala Buddhists, Tamil Hindus of Sri Lanka and South India, Muslims and indigenous people.
Many Sri Lankans show great reverence to God Kataragama. They honour him as a very powerful deity and beg divine help to overcome their personal problems or for success in business enterprises. Poojas or the service is conducted daily, early in the morning, noon and evenings as well.
